January Top Five
Thankfully it’s not all doom and gloom during cold January and music lovers can beat the winter blues by indulging in some rather wonderful records released this month. Here are my top five picks for y’all:
The honourable Gilles Peterson (my favourite radio presenter) did a wonderful job scouring for remixers for his latest popular signing: Anushka. He offers 2 fantastic re-interpretations of ‘Never Can Decide’ by eclectic electronic artist GoldFFinch, and Drum & Bass trio Ivy Lab. I’m very much delighted by the latter, a superb work of liquid Drum & Bass which embellishes the original’s vocals all the while offering that classy ‘rolling’ groove we love so much in the genre.
- Cristobal & The Sea ‘Sunset of our Troubles’ Unsigned.
Ok, so I’m cheating a little as this is an unsigned song and it was posted on Soundcloud some time last year, but this is nevertheless a new discovery that I’m super enchanted with. I love nothing more than different cultures and styles of music brought together, and what’s not to love when Folk with an eerie sense of Jazz is so brilliantly combined with Bossanova. J’adore.
- Acharne ‘Ghostling’ Seppuku Records.
Incognito Berlin techno artist (yes, another one) releases his first material on the brand new and cryptic Seppuku Records. I’m not usually into Techno, but I have to admit there is something rather compelling in Ghostling’s industrial feel, twisted vocals and thick drum patterns which ultimately render a pretty slick and unremitting rhythm. Dark - but captivating.
Whoever this Detroit Swindle person is - he’s got the Midas touch, because all his records and remixes are GOLD. You can instantly recognise his brilliant production style of elegant loops that are full of swing with synths and strings that elevate the vibe to a natural frenzy. While most folk are talking about his signings on Dirt Crew Recordings, this remix on UK favourite Greco-Roman is definitely worth putting in your record bag.
- Andrew Ashong ‘Special’ Which Way Records
The singer songwriter finally returns with a brand new and shiny EP following his debut on Theo Parrishes’ Sound Signature with the wonderful ‘Flowers’. It was difficult to choose between ‘Love the Way’ which is nothing short of a sweet, unspoken serenade and ‘Special’, but I have to admit I’m a complete sucker for the latter’s longing vocals sitting on a very mellow soul of stripped down funk. The perfect winter warmer, if you will.
Rick Wade ‘Sweet Life (Tom Taylor & Simon Morell Remix) - Fina Records

My kinda deep house: classy, stringy, swirly, dancy.

Another wonderful song by this wonderful artist who broke through on Theo Parrish’s label with his wonderful song ‘Flowers’. Wonderful.
